Sheriff Roundtree throws support to SPLOST 7 package

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree said the special purpose local option sales tax 7 package is vital for the department.

"I not only feel this SPLOST package should pass, I feel that it must pass," Roundtree said during a press conference Monday.

But Roundtree said the support isn't politically motivated. The department could get nearly $24 million of the $194 million package if it passes.

"The current package will replace over 280 patrol vehicles, which is one of our most crucial needs, as many of our cars are over the limits," Roundtree said.

He also said the department rents a radio network from South Carolina, which costs $500,000 a year. It went out twice during the February ice storm.

"We were put on a list to be serviced after South Carolina customers," Roundtree said. "Any time without radio communication could have meant the difference between life and death to the citizens of this community."

Mayor Deke Copenhaver agrees that it's critical this gets passed.

"This is a good solid package," Copenhaver said. "It addresses cancer patients, arts and culture. South Augusta needs are met. Public safety is a key as well. I believe it needs to pass and will pass."

Sheriff Roundtree said he knows some people do have concerns with the package and urges everyone to ask elected officials questions.

Voters will make a decision about SPLOST 7 during the May 20 elections.
