Police checkpoint in Harlem receives positive response

HARLEM, GA (WFXG) -

Harlem police chief Gary Jones said this wasn't the first checkpoint, and it certainly won't be the last. Jones said they even made arrests for some serious crimes at the check point location on Gordon Highway near It's A Man's Place.

"We ended up seizing a vehicle that was involved in a felony case of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute," said Jones.

Reaction on social media has been positive to the checkpoint, with one commenter saying they went through it and the officers were well-mannered. Jones said that's what he likes to hear.

"We want to make sure we treat people nice," said Jones. "You know, we want to make sure people understand why we were there. And make sure we educated them on how we were conducting a safety checkpoint."

Someone who assisted them: the Citizens on Patrol team - community members who have helped keep crime down in Harlem.

"They assisted us on this road check as well," said Jones. "Certainly not in a law enforcement capacity, but they did assist us."

Jones said, at the end of the day, their department's number one goal is to keep the citizens safe.

"We certainly have been well received by the community for doing this type of event, and we will continue to do so," said Jones.
