AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

A North Augusta man is behind bars after Richmond County deputies say he stabbed a woman to death Monday at her Augusta apartment.

Nathan Mims, 46, is charged with murder in the death of 43-year-old Natty Ortiz-Ramos, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies responded to 2506 Lumpkin Road at 1:17 a.m. Monday. When they arrived, they learned Mims and Ortiz-Ramos had been involved in a domestic dispute.

Deputies said Mims began assaulting Ortiz-Ramos and then stabbed her multiple times.

Ortiz-Ramos was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:11 a.m., Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Atlanta.

Neighbors say Ortiz-Ramos and Mims had been dating, but this was the first time in a month they had seen him at the apartment. They also say Ortiz-Ramos was a loving mother and neighbor, and that they're still having trouble believing what happened.

Mims was at the scene when deputies arrived and surrendered, according tot he sheriff's office. He was treated for minor cuts and booked at the Richmond County Jail.

He is charged with murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

This is Richmond County's eighth murder of 2014.
