RICHMOND, VA (WFXG) -

If you told me at the beginning of the season that Joey Logano would be the second driver to notch two wins before the halfway mark of the 2014 season, I would have thought you were on something.

However, to the surprise of most everyone, Logano slid underneath three battling previous champions to steal a victory Saturday night in Richmond.

"I was able to see that in front of me and wanted to make sure I was close enough when something happened I was able to take advantage of it," commented Logano on his view of the action after the final restart.

That action was between Matt Kenseth, Jeff Gordon, and Brad Keselowski. The three champions battled door to door for nearly seven laps with each looking for an opportunity to get out front for the win.

"At that point it was really just trying to battle with those guys to get the best finish that we could," said Gordon of the situation. "The 22 was in a great position while we were all sitting there sliding around battling it out."

Once the action got physical, Logano was able to slide underneath the crashing trio to jump into the lead for good.

"Eventually the seas parted because I got all air on the nose while they were up there racing each other," continued Logano. "I was able to get underneath and pass them both in one shot, so it worked out pretty good for me."

Keselowski felt that Kenseth was not racing fairly during those final laps but Gordon didn't agree.

"I think that Matt did what he felt like he needed to do," explained Gordon. He made his car really wide and probably didn't make the guys behind him very happy, but I can't say he did anything wrong."

Logano and his team have not been a force on tracks under a mile and a half so, the win at the three quarter mile short track in Richmond is definitely a confidence builder.

"Having a couple wins this early in the season and in two completely different racetracks make you very confident for the rest of the season," observed Logano on his team's new found success.

The two wins now locks the young driver into the Chase so, how does he plan on approaching the rest of the season.

"We've put ourselves in a good position this early in the season, and we're going to have some fun," grinned Logano in the media center.

It's nice to see young drivers like Joey come of age in the sport after taking a lot of criticism the last few years. Is he championship contender for 2014? A lot of that depends on how they plan the rest of the season.
