Prepare a safe space in your home ahead of severe weather, tornadoes

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

There are several things you can do to make weathering a storm a lot less stressful. Planning ahead with your family is key.

"I'm just gathering up some blankets and some pillows, things that you might want to take into your safe space just to add some extra protection for you," said Beth Toll, regional communications director with The American Red Cross, as she prepared a safe space in her home Sunday.

Toll advises that you "go to the lowest level of your home, somewhere with no windows. An underground safe shelter is best."

An inside closet or bathroom can suit you well in a strong tornado."If that is the innermost room, that may be the only thing left standing after a major tornado. We've seen that a lot of times," Toll said.

Equally important as a place you decide to go are the things you take with you. You need an emergency preparedness kit that is accessible. "You want to have enough water, one gallon per person per day. You want to have your canned goods, your food. You want to have your extra flash light, extra batteries and a weather radio." Seal important documents in a Ziploc bag and bring any medications you may rely on.

Lastly, be sure you include your pets. Have their tags, food and water. Put your pets in crates and take them to the safe place with you.
