Deputies investigating armed robbery at methadone clinic

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Richmond County deputies responded to an armed robbery at the August Metro Treatment Center Friday morning.  The methadone center was robbed around 10:30 a.m. and two suspects escaped.

M. Steven Fishman's family has owned Sidney's Department Store and Uniforms on Broad St. for 120 years, and he says crime isn't usually a problem.

"The 500 block of broad street probably is the safest block in the city of Augusta," Fishman says.

Fishman says increasing security in businesses would help make sure this doesn't happen again.

"If you become a hard target, people are not as interested. They would rather pick on a soft target," he says.

He isn't  worried about his store becoming a target.

"Most people usually respect a gun shop and they realize it's not an easy target," he says with a laugh.

And he feels this is an isolated incident, and downtown is still safe.

"This is a very, very peaceful block," says Fishman.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
