Medac Inc. opening facility in North Augusta, creating 200 jobs

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC (WFXG) - A healthcare-related company is moving its headquarters to Aiken County, bringing 200 jobs to the area, officials announced Thursday.

Medac Inc., a provider of billing and practice management services to anesthesia-related healthcare providers, plans to streamline operations of three facilities into a single, consolidated facility in North Augusta, S.C.

"I think it shows that we can compete with anyone in the CSRA for business," North Augusta Mayor Lark Jones told WFXG.

It only took 3 months for Medac and the City of North Augusta to finalize a million dollar move will create 200 jobs in the next few years. Mayor Jones says the city's future is very bright.

"We try to make North Augusta a place grow, we grow logically and reasonably. You know we don't have traffic tie ups and things that make it tough on folks," said Mayor Jones.

Medac, a local medical billing company, has outgrown their current facilities. The company's founder and president says the relocation is great for his 400 employees.

"It's beautiful, and its walking distance from restaurants and shops and its a great place for employees to work at," said Beijon Memar.

Memar says its not just an expansion for his company, the move has sentimental value.

"This whole company has been a vision of my brother, my late brother, and to see his dream come true and to be here today and for us and North Augusta to help his dream come true it means a lot to me. More than anything else," Memar told WFXG.

Both Mayor Jones and Memar are very optimistic about Medac's growth, and North Augusta's economic future.

"This will make them the largest private sector employer in the city of Augusta," Mayor Jones said.

"We're pretty excited and I think we're going to grow a lot bigger than what they're anticipating us to," said Memar.

The company will be moving to a two-story, 60,000-square-foot building in the North Augusta riverfront development area, located near the North Augusta Municipal Center.

Overall, the $12 million investment will bring 615 jobs to the area.

Medac Inc. began as Medical Bureau Inc., a multi-specialty billing company providing services to an array of medical fields, in 1986 by Kam Memar. He was joined by his brother Beijon in 1989. In 1992 the brothers realized the need for specialization in the anesthesiology sector, and Medac Inc. was born in Augusta with only eight employees.

Today, Medac has more than 550 employees nationwide. The company is considered the second-largest privately held anesthesia billing company in the country, with a presence in 37 states, according to South Carolina officials.

Medac plans to start construction in the lot adjacent to the North Augusta Municipal building and they're expected to finalize the move sometime next year.
