FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 25-year-old prison inmate was sentenced to 28 more years in prison for stabbing another inmate and leaving him in vegetative state.

The Pinal County Attorney's Office said Vance Johnson was sentenced April 14 for stabbing the 48-year-old victim twice with a makeshift knife at the Arizona Department of Corrections' Eyman Complex in January 2009, according to a Pinal County Sheriff's Office report.

Johnson was one four inmates returning from their evening meal when an argument that began earlier in the day reignited in a hallway between two pods, the report said.

The stabbing left the victim with a severe brain injury, the County Attorneys Office said.

The instrument Johnson used was retrieved from a toilet in his cell.

After a four-day trial in January, a jury found Johnson guilty of dangerous or deadly assault on a prisoner with three aggravating factors, and not guilty of attempted first-degree murder.
