Celebrate Earth Day by giving an item a new purpose

(WMC) – Earth Day is celebrated in 192 countries and its purpose is to bring awareness and protection to the earth's environment.

Earth Day events are happening throughout the Mid-South and there are also plenty of ways to teach your kids how to recycle, reuse, and save our planet.

Many people like to celebrate Earth Day by going outdoors. Shelby Farms, Memphis Botanic Garden, and Memphis Zoo are all popular spots, but you can celebrate at home as well.

"Repurposing is really a mindset," said Angela Davis with Hometalk. "It's about looking at an object and seeing it beyond its intellectual purpose."

Angela Davis is a mother of five and uses the website "Hometalk" to get ideas about Earth Day. It's the largest home and garden social network; click here to learn more about it: http://www.hometalk.com/

Davis said, "Let them see you having fun doing it and saving money doing it, because the money that you save on things like this you can always start a savings account with them. You can show how to save."

Davis brought a lamp shade she bought for $2 at a thrift store to demonstrate how to reuse it, by using the skeleton as a jewelry or a picture holder or something else.

"It's used to hold hair bows. You can also use it to hold notes, photos and you can slip it right on these ribbons and you can clip on the skeleton itself." Davis explained.

These are lessons of how to repurpose, reuse and recycle through Earth Day celebrations in and around the Mid-South.

Davis also showed WMC Action News 5's Andrew Douglas how to repurpose a lamp shade. See the video with her step by step instructions by clicking here: http://bit.ly/1mzaB1S
