A suspicious device has been determined safe, after the bomb squad was called to investigate on Monday morning. The unusual incident closed I-75 southbound and I-280 northbound at the north Toledo interchange. The highways have since reopened.
Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department says just after 9:30 a.m., an Ohio Department of Transportation crew cleaning litter along the highway found what appeared to be a bomb device.
"He immediately recognized it as being something suspicious and reported it immediately -- just a part of his training, very heads up. So he did a fantastic job," said ODOT spokeswoman Theresa Pollick.
Heffernan says with Monday being one year since the bombings at the Boston Marathon, they were going to take this situation seriously, making sure everyone was safe. He says the ODOT worker did what they want anyone to do if they stumble upon something suspicious.
"If you see something, say something. That's kind of the simple thing that we like to have out there in the public. The worker today for ODOT did that, and so we are very grateful to that person," said Heffernan.
Around noon, a bomb squad investigating at the scene determined the item was safe and no longer in danger of exploding. Little details are being released about the small, suspicious package as the investigation continues.
"From here, it's going to be in the investigation stage, where we try to determine what exactly the object is and if it was a danger," explained Heffernan.
Both I-75 and I-280 reopened after 1 p.m.
