LINCOLN COUNTY, GA (WFXG) -

The body of a missing 72-year-old Lincoln County woman was recovered in her vehicle in the waters of Fishing Creek near a boat ramp just off Georgia State Route 79 (Elberton Highway) in Lincoln County late Monday.

Lincoln County Sheriff Bruce Beggs said Shirley Lavender of the Fishing Creek Subdivision had last been seen leaving her residence by her family on April 13.

The body and the vehicle were located after a search by officers of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and the Lincoln County Office of Emergency Services (OES), Beggs said. The Elbert County Dive Team also assisted in the location and recovery of the vehicle.

The cause and time of death are unknown at this time, the sheriff said.  Coroner Paul Reviere has sent the body to the state crime lab for an autopsy and the investigation is continuing, Beggs said.

"I appreciate all of the area businesses and the media that assisted in publicizing information about this missing person," Beggs said. "Unfortunately this was not the outcome we had hoped for."

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
