Armed man robs Sprint Food Store in South Augusta

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is searching for an armed man after a robbery Saturday morning.

Calls came in at 9:52 a.m. in reference to a robbery of the Sprint Food Store on the 3400 block of Mike Padgett Highway, Sgt. Shane McDaniel said.

A man wearing a black mask entered the store and had his right hand in a black bag to either hide a weapon or to pretend he had a weapon.

The suspect was approximately 25-30 years of age, 5'11"-6'00" tall, thick build, medium complexion, and was wearing gray or stonewashed shorts, a gray shirt, and had his face and head completely covered with black cloth.  After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect fled the scene on foot.

Kenneth Thomas works at a convenience store less than a mile from where the robbery took place, and he says he'll be making some changes to be sure where he works stays safe.

"When I hear things like that happen I pay more attention to if all our doors are locked, you know who's walking around," he says.

Thomas also says people need to keep an eye on what goes on outside their businesses.

"I even do parking lot sweeps to, you know, kinda see what's going on because you have to be aware of who's moving," Thomas says.

He says he's seen more police in the area, and that hopefully this means the suspect will be caught soon.

"It looks like about every hour they're making their patrols, so they're looking for whoever it is," he says.

Anyone with information leading to the identity of the suspect is asked to contact the Richmond County Sheriffs Office at 706-821-1080 or the Criminal Investigation Division at 706-821-1020.
