Doctors Hospital gets new cath lab

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

A new state-of-the art cath lab is at Doctors Hospital.

"We have a machine that allows us to see the equipment we use to treat heart attacks and blockers in the heart, with more precision," said Dr. Rodolfo Machado, a board certified interventional cardiologist at Doctors.

"We have a typical table where the patients lay down," Dr. Machado continued. "We have a brand new camera with very high resolution pictures and it's capable of zoom in, zoom out and using less radiation."

Typically this kind of procedures or surgery is done through femoral artery, which is located in the thigh, but the new technology allows it to be done using the wrist.

"The advantages are the patient doesn't need to lay down flat for several hours, there's less chance of vascular complications and having the new equipment like we have right now it allows us to do ureteric catheterisation much more safe," Dr. Machado said.

Possibly what's most fascinating about this kind of procedure is that patients can leave the hospital, the same day, after surgery.

"The recovery time is much sooner and they are able to leave if it's an uncomplicated case, by the end of the day," said Dr. Machado.

Dr. Machado's first patient using the new cath lab was treated and released later today.
