Gov. Nikki Haley signs 'Emma's Law'

AIKEN, SC (WFXG) -

Governor Nikki Haley made it tougher for drunk drivers to get behind the wheel in South Carolina.

Governor Haley signed Emma's Law Monday, after 6-year-old Emma Longstreet's family has pushed since her death in 2011 for stricter crackdowns on drunk driving.

Emma died when a drunk driver smashed into her family minivan in Lexington, S.C. Emma's Law will require first-time offenders who are found behind the wheel with a .15 percent blood alcohol level and who did not get their license suspended to install an ignition interlock device in their car.

The device is actually a breathalyzer, and the offender blows into a mouth piece before starting the car. If the person is found to have a blood alcohol level of .2 or above, the car does not turn on.

We reached out to the governor's office for comment:

"Mr. And Mrs. Longstreet put great love and commitment toward honoring Emma and preventing other families from enduring the pain they have had to experience. I am proud to sign this bill and hope this brings peace to the Longstreet family while protecting citizens in South Carolina."

The ignition interlock device would be installed in the offender's car for a minimum of six months. It costs $100 to install, and there is a monthly service charge.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
