PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the sexual assault of a woman near a Phoenix canal bank Thursday afternoon.

The 19-year-old woman was walking the Western Canal bank near 21st Street and Baseline Road about 1 p.m. when she was grabbed from behind and pulled down an embankment to a nearly secluded area, said Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

Her attacker strangled her until she became unconscious and sexually assaulted her, Thompson said.

Witnesses called police and told them they thought two boys were fighting along the bank, and shortly after officers arrived they found the woman and later saw the 16-year-old running along the canal near 16th Street and Baseline Road, Thompson said.

The boy was held and questioned until police determined he was the suspect, Thompson said.

The woman was taken to a Phoenix hospital and treated for her injuries.

The suspect was taken to the Maricopa County Juvenile Court Center on numerous felony charges, including one count of sexual assault, two counts of sexual abuse, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault.

Thompson said he anticipated the boy would be tried as an adult for the crimes.
