Beating the AZ heat and saving on your electric bill

The calendar says it's still spring but the Arizona heat has some double-checking the dates. The temperature was just shy of 100 degrees in the Valley on Thursday and many people turned on their air conditioning units for the first time.

Bud and Mary Guthrie say keeping the air conditioner on and the electric bill low are key to their Arizona lifestyle.

"I don't think I'd be able to stay here if there was no air conditioning," Mary Guthrie said.

Part of keeping costs low, the Guthries say, is having their air conditioning unit checked every year. Precision Air and Heating tech Paul Stanton did a tune-up for the Guthries but he says there are things you can do yourself to save some money.

"The first thing you should do is make sure your filter is nice and clean," Stanton said.

Experts suggest cleaning your filter once a month and even more often if you have pets.

Checking your home's insulation is another cost-saving measure. Stanton says insulation keeps the warm air out and the cool air in during a hot summer.

"Make sure your ducts don't have any leaks," Stanton said. "If you don't get [your system] checked on a regular basis, you're throwing your money away."

Running your air conditioning a little higher when you're away from home can also save you on your next electric bill, according to Stanton. Schedule your thermostat to a more comfortable temperature just before you get home.
