Arizona senator breaks leg in House-Senate game

PHOENIX (AP) -

An Arizona state senator who planned to run in the Boston marathon later this month has broken her leg in the annual House-Senate softball game.

Democratic Sen. Katie Hobbs of Phoenix says the fractured tibia will likely keep her out of the April 21 race. She still plans to travel to Boston with friends and watch them compete.

Hobbs hit an infield single in Wednesday evening's game but hit first base oddly while beating out the throw. Republican Sen. Kelli Ward of Lake Havasu, a physician, assisted her and other team members carried her off the field. She has a fracture in the top of the shin bone but needs to get a full prognosis.

The Senate lost to the House by a score of 15-5.
