SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield police hunted down a 23-year-old man who allegedly snuck up behind a woman, covered her mouth, and stole her gold necklace.

George Gonzalez, of 66 Mattoon St., approached the 52-year-old female victim from behind while she was walking on Pearl Street about 8 p.m. on Wednesday. When Gonzalez covered the victim's mouth she was able to bite his hand, but he got away with her jewelry, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

The victim filed a complaint and told police the man fled toward Mattoon Street. About 45 minutes later, police saw a man that matched the suspect's description nearby Mattoon Street.

"The predator was possibly looking for his next target," Delaney said, adding that he fled when he was spotted by police.

Police chased him on foot and more officers converged on the immediate area. Gonzalez was apprehended near 115 Chestnut St. with the victim's gold necklace in his pocket. The victim positively identified Gonzalez and police photographs were taken of the bite mark on his hand, Delaney said.

"This bite mark is fantastic evidence that will put him behind bars for years to come," Delaney said. "Let's hope they throw away the key on this coward."

Gonzalez was charged with unarmed robbery, assault and battery, and resisting arrest. He will be arraigned today in Springfield District Court.
