ORO VALLEY, AZ (CBS5) -

A suspect in several car break-ins in Oro Valley has fraudulently cashed personal checks from the victims totaling more than $25,000, police said Thursday. All of those checks have been cashed in the Phoenix area.

"We have identified one individual that appears to be cashing checks. (She is cashing) at least 10 different checks at multiple locations in the Phoenix valley area," said Sgt. Carmen Trevizo with the Oro Valley Police Department.

The Oro Valley break-ins occurred in January 2014 at the local LA Fitness. However, Trevizo said it appears another car break-in from January 2013 in Central Phoenix is also linked to these crimes.

"Basically, we have one individual that is assuming the identity of a victim, and then cashing checks in another victim's name," explained Trevizo.

In some cases, the suspect is waiting more than a year to use stolen checks. Banks usually put a one-year-freeze on stolen checks.

"If you have your identity compromised, or your purse stolen, close your bank account and open another one. Don't just have (the bank) put a fraud alert on (your account)," suggested Trevizo.

The Oro Valley Police Department needs help identifying and locating the suspect.

The suspect is a woman between 45 to 50 years old. She has brown hair and drives a newer model black or dark gray Mercedes S-class.

People with any information are asked to call 911, 88-crime or the OVPD at 520-229-4900.
