PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The City of Phoenix will receive a financial boost from Grand Canyon University to enhance the city's public safety, drowning prevention and graffiti abatement programs that might be impacted by budget cuts.

The city on Thursday announced that its public-private partnership GCU will expand with a $125,000 commitment from school.

GCU will put $100,000 to fund a civilian position that provides drowning prevention services to the community and $25,000 to fund graffiti abatement supplies, training and support to create a graffiti-free zone in the Canyon Corridor area, the city said.

The GCU Canyon Corridor area is bordered by Interstate 17 to the east and 35th Avenue to the west, and Indian School Road to the south and Missouri Avenue to the north.

The money brings GCU's two-year community investment in the partnership to $1.375 million, the city said.
