MILTON, KY (WAVE) - Crews finished sliding the new Milton-Madison Bridge into place Thursday morning.

The 2,427-foot-long, 30-million pound truss was moved a total of 55 feet from temporary piers onto the newly refurbished piers that held up the old span. The slide began April 9 when the bridge was moved 16 feet in eight hours. Windy conditions brought the slide to a halt with 39 feet to go.

Walsh Construction, which built the new Ohio River bridge linking Milton, Kentucky to Madison, Indiana, feared Thursday's weather conditions might postpone the complete slide once again, but crews were able to successfully finish moving the bridge into place.

Now that the bridge is in its final position, additional work, including inspections, welding and bolting it into place, reconnecting the driving surfaces, installing expansion joints, pouring concrete and configuring drainage and restriping, has to be completed before the bridge can open. A spokesperson for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said if everything goes as planned, the Milton-Madison bridge will reopen to traffic in about a week.
