A federal law enforcement official says a man kidnapped from his North Carolina home may have been targeted because of his daughter's work as a prosecutor on drug and gang cases.

Arthur Janssen, 63, was reunited with his family Thursday morning after federal agents rescued him from an Atlanta apartment complex.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations Hostage Rescue Team rescued Janssen late Wednesday night. The rescue took place at the Forest Cove apartments on New Town Circle SE.

Police in Wake Forest, NC, said Janssen was kidnapped from his home on Sky Hill Place when he returned from cycling Saturday morning. When his wife returned from shopping, she discovered what appeared to be blood outside their home and called police.

The hunt for Janssen expanded to include numerous law enforcement agencies across state lines.

Agents determined Janssen was the victim of a kidnapping and was being held in Atlanta.

Five people have been charged in the kidnapping: Jenna Paula Martin, Tianna Maynard, Javante Price, Michael Montreal Gooden, and Clifton James Robin.

John Strong, FBI special agent in charge in North Carolina, says Janssen's kidnapping was related to his daughter's prosecution of North Carolina prisoner Kelvin Melton, who is serving a life sentence for his 2012 conviction for being a habitual felon. He was also convicted of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Authorities say Janssen's kidnappers threatened to torture him and sent text messages to his wife making demands. They also sent her a picture of her husband tied up.

Authorities did not say what the demands were.
