Young girls return wallet stuffed with cash to rightful owner

MASON, OH (FOX19) -

What would you do if you found a wallet stuffed with cash? A couple of young girls decided to do the right thing and track down the rightful owner.

Sanibel and Sailor Betts, ages 9 and 11, found a wallet containing nearly $1,000 at a Lowes in Mason, Ohio. The girls immediately turned to their father.

"We looked at it, we opened it up and saw what was in it," said Jeff Betts, the father of the young girls. "My daughter said ‘wow!'"

Betts and his daughters began to track down the rightful owner. Returning the wallet was no easy task. Going off the photo on the driver's license, the family tried to find the wallet's owner at the store. Having no luck, the family turned to the address listed on the license.

"We went to the address that was on the driver's license and tracked that down. We now know that he moved," said Betts. "We started calling, Googling, LinkedIn and everything. It was very difficult to find the owner."

After a long search online, the family was able to contact the rightful owner. The two parties united on Wednesday. The young girls handed the stuffed wallet to the owner with smiles on their faces.

Betts says the experience was teaching moment for his daughters.

"I've always taught them that if you do the right thing, it will come back to you even better," said Betts. "It makes me very proud that they were so determined to find the owner."
