'Homeland' leaving Charlotte to film in Africa for upcoming season

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

It appears to be a wrap for Charlotte's connection to one of the biggest hits on tv... at least for now.

After shooting most of the first three seasons in the Charlotte-area, Showtime's popular TV series "Homeland" is moving to South Africa for season four.

"Our Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning drama series HOMELAND will begin production in Cape Town, South Africa," Showtime officials announced online on Friday around noon.

"Season four will find Carrie Mathison (Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe Award winner Claire Danes) assigned to one of the most volatile and dangerous CIA stations in the Middle East where she is back on the front lines in the war on terror."

The series is expected to begin production in mid-June and shoot through November of this year.

"We've been so lucky to work with one of the best crews in the business for the last three seasons in Charlotte," said Homeland showrunner and executive producer Alex Gansa.

"We knew going into season four that we would need to move the production overseas to tell the story of Carrie returning to the Middle East as chief of station."

WBTV spoke with former Homeland assistant costume designer, Tiffany Verch.

"It's sad to see the family go," she said.

No word if the storylines will bring the show back to the US, and Charlotte, if picked up for a fifth season, but Verch is optimistic.

"They may be back here for some scenes, so hopefully they'll call me up for that," Verch said.

"Homeland" has won five Golden Globes and eight Primetime Emmy Awards in two years.
