Snag-a-job: Job hunters need to start looking now

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A recent snag-a-job study reveals good news for those seeking summer employment. A survey of more than 250 companies, large and small, shows they are already hiring - and in some cases, wages have even increased.

"For the folks that have dropped out of looking for a job know there is an opportunity for you to kind of get back into the job search," said Jason Hamilton with snag-a-job. "What we are really seeing with the results is there are actually more opportunities for younger workers... for people who don't have a lot of experience that are looking for that first time job, there are a lot more opportunities."

The outlook is also better for those with experience who may not have had success in their job search last summer.

"Last year, I believe it was about two million people that were hired during the seasonal hiring surge, and if you think about half of those were returning workers last year, and now 20 percent are going to be those returning workers, so I'd say if you do the math, it's a 500 to 600 thousand increase in the number of opportunities that are out there for people who are not returning workers," said Hamilton.

But the time to start searching is right now. Last year, about 50 percent of the summer jobs available were filled by the end of April. This year, that number is expected to be about 25 percent by the end of April, giving you a little more time to search, but not much.

"By the end of May, most of the jobs are gonna be locked up," said Hamilton.

The other piece of positive news is that hourly wages have increased slightly up about one percent from last year.

"It's moving in a positive direction, I think it's a positive development," said Hamilton.
