Chesterfield Police say they are following a new lead in the death of 7-year-old Brendon Mackey, but say they do not have anyone in custody or a person of interest in the case.
Police say they received the new lead while responding to a domestic situation involving a firearm. The firearm was taken from the home and sent for testing in connection with the case. The firearm is the eighth weapon to be tested in the Mackey case.
Chesterfield Police say they never use the term "person of interest." Mackey's father, Bryan, used the term to describe the new lead Thursday.
Throughout the investigation, detectives maintained the .40 caliber gun was fired within a one mile radius near The Boathouse restaurant where Mackey was killed. The gun taken from the home on Breaker Point Road is about two miles away.
According to Chesterfield Police Captain Chris Hensley, this gun owner's name has come up before.
"His name was brought up based on the potential of having a .40 caliber weapon," Captain Hensley said.
He won't go into what happened with that specific tip but said, "The canvas was approximately 1,800 homes we had a lot of people that had weapons that did not voluntarily turn those weapons over."
The mother of the seven-year-old Chesterfield boy killed by a stray bullet feels there is little hope police will find her son's killer, even with a new lead in the investigation.
"It's been really hard," says Brendon's mom Marie Harris. "I think about him every day."
For Harris, sad reality is starting to sink in. "I really don't think we're going to find the person at all," she said. "Over time you just get those feelings and you just kind of, it's you know, just doing therapy on yourself ."
Harris says her focus remains on her other two children, especially her oldest daughter who shared a room with her little brother.
"Just seeing what she has to go through every day has been really hard," she said.
She says her one hope is that new tips will turn up now that the next Fourth of July celebration in Brandermill is just a few months away.
