MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - People in the Bluff City are feeling relieved as efforts get underway to repair a major sinkhole on Highpoint Terrace.

Richard and Virginia Stanley, and their neighbors, have been concerned about the sinkhole for quite some time.

"Oh goodness, a little over a month," said Virginia.

After a few weeks of dodging the sinkhole, she called 311.

"I called because the hole got bigger and people had already started hitting the barricade," she explained. "And one car went barreling down the street and hit that barricade."

Within two hours of WMC Action News 5's Lauren Squires sending the pictures of the sinkhole to Memphis Public Works, a crew was on the scene to fill it and cover it with a steel plate. The steel plate will remain until there until crews are able to investigate and determine exactly how it should be repaired.

The crews on the scene came as relief for the Stanleys, as well as many others in the neighborhood who see drivers come through the neighborhood every day.

"They come fast because we have no stoplights," said Richard.

"It [the steel plate] seems that it's probably better than it was, because the hole is not there," said Virginia.

If you have a similar problem in your neighborhood, call the city's 311 line or download the Smart Government app on your smart phone. Using the app, you can take a picture of the sinkhole and send it in.
