Parents of Valdosta elementary students sign 'letters of intent'

Scott Wilson Scott Wilson
VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Parents of elementary school students in Valdosta can now fill out a form requesting that their children remain in their current school next year.

The parents have until April 30th to show up at the Board of Education Office to fill out the form. The school district is giving parents the option due to recent rezoning which would have caused some students to attend a different elementary school next year.

"We're lucky enough to get into Salas Mahone, even though we're zoned for S.L. Mason," said Scott Wilson, a parent who was at the Board of Education Office filling out a form shortly after the doors opened at 8 a.m.

"Salas Mahone is actually closer to our home, as well as a lot more of their friends go to that school...when we got that opportunity, we wanted to keep it," Wilson continued.

Requests will be granted on a first come, first serve basis. Letters will be mailed home to parents about a week after they fill out the form, letting them know if their request has been granted.

The Board of Education Office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
