PHOENIX, AZ (CNN) - The Arizona woman accused of starving her nine-month-old son is speaking out.

Veronica Diaz and her boyfriend were taken into custody after police say the baby was deemed malnourished and severely underweight.

"I feel bad about what happened,” says Diaz.

These days Diaz has all the time in the world to reflect on her actions as she sits inside a Phoenix jail cell.

"His eyes were twitching. He would respond, but every time he opened his eyes they would just start twitching. His color wasn't good, and from what they said, his kidneys were failing," says Diaz.

Medical personnel informed police that the nine month old only weighed seven pounds.

Diaz admitted that she stopped giving her son baby formula on March 1.

"He didn't have enough formula and I didn't have enough money,” she explains.

Diaz says her boyfriend and the baby's father Ryan Morris recently became unemployed and they were struggling to make ends meet.

Morris told police that he had just gotten his last check and combined with Diaz’s social security, they had almost $1000.

"He had to pay his parents off,” says Diaz.

Diaz says the couple opted to pay their car insurance, utilities, and rent.

"There was a bill he had to pay for Netflix for the older kids to watch,” defends Diaz.

She also claims she had a $340 cable and internet bill for premium channels like HBO.

When asked how she thought she would be perceived for choosing to pay non-necessity bills over buying formula, Diaz said "Not good".
