Approval process on SCS budget could be delayed

(WMC-TV) - Shelby County Schools board members who need more time to consider next year's budget could delay the approval process.

More than one board member would like more time to review the budget and consider the feedback received during last week's community meetings.

"It's a very important process and what we decide makes a big difference," said Chris Caldwell, SCS board member.

Making a hasty decision on Shelby County Schools budget is something Caldwell says the district cannot afford.

"I've always wondered why people didn't realize the school board has more impact on the community and economy than any other elected body," said Caldwell.

Caldwell will support a delay in approving the budget, allowing more time to consider concerns raised during a series of public hearings.

"I think what we heard the most about were world languages and possibly readjusting the start times," he said regarding the community forums.

Caldwell concedes that in a shrinking district with limited resources not everyone will be happy with the end result, but at least they will be heard.

While a decision on the main budget may be delayed Tuesday night, the capital improvement plan could be approved, along with new attendance zones.
