MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Tony award-winning production of "War Horse" is at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis.

"War Horse" is the powerful story of young Albert's beloved horse, Joey, who has been enlisted to fight for the English in World War I.

Joey—a life-sized puppet run by three people making up the head, the heart, and the hind—met mounted patrol officers from the Memphis Police Department. No major war sparked between the horses, just fascination at Joey and the production around it.

"We can't speak to each other or whisper to each other, because we're mic'ed up. We also do the sounds of the horse together," said John Hoche, who plays part of the puppet.

Robert Burns says at any time the puppeteers could be carrying around 100 pounds individually.

"It's a great physical toll and a lot of repetitive movement. That's a lot to ask every night," he said.

On stage, Joey goes to fight for the English in World War I and ends up serving on both sides of the war. What follows is an amazing story that has captivated audiences worldwide. Also the production, which has won five Tony awards including best play, has broken new ground with Joey.

"As performers we really do feel more connected with the audience, and we know the audience has become very connected to the inanimate objects that we fill with life . It's a beautiful thing to be a part of," said cast member James Duncan.

It has been called a landmark theater event. War Horse premieres Tuesday night at the Orpheum. It runs through Sunday March 30.
