PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington won't be suiting up this fall.

An NFL spokesperson announced Friday that Washington has been suspended immediately without pay for at least one year for violating the NFL policy and programs for substance abuse.

No details were given on the substance abuse violation.

Cardinals GM Steve Keim released these statement following the NFL's announcement:

"It's completely unacceptable that Daryl has once again put us in this position. We all know what the consequences are and will deal with them. From a personal standpoint, our hope is that this suspension will give Daryl the opportunity to accept the necessary help and guidance to get his life back on track and we will certainly support him however we can.

"As it pertains to our team, our approach is the same as it's always been: next man up. We talk a lot about how critical depth is to a team because situations always arise where you lose players, whether by injury or other circumstances such as this one. One player's absence is another's opportunity. That approach has served us well in the past and we will rely on it now."

In March, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge M. Scott McCoy sentenced Washington to one-year of probation for assaulting his ex-girlfriend with domestic violence terms as per his guilty plea to a charge of aggravated assault.

Washington had been facing an April 30 trial in the case after originally pleading guilty to aggravated assault and trespassing charges.

He was accused of grabbing his ex-girlfriend, the mother of the couple's daughter, by the throat and shoving her to the ground during an argument at her apartment on May 1, 2013.

His ex-girlfriend told police that Washington pushed her with two hands, causing her to fall and break her right collarbone.

The argument took place on the stairway leading to the victim's apartment. According to a court document, Washington was holding the baby at the time.

Washington used his left hand to pushed the woman away, according to a probable cause statement.

At one point, Washington extended his hand and grabbed the woman by the neck, pushing her over the landing railing while choking her, court paperwork stated.

The woman said she was unable to breathe and "felt as if she was going to fall over the railing," the document stated.

A forensic exam conducted later showed the woman had injuries consistent with her version of the events, court paperwork stated.

The woman was able to grab a hold of the baby and rushed into her apartment, with Washington following her into the bedroom, court documents said.

Washington grabbed the woman's cell phone and walked out of the apartment, according to the probable cause statement.

As Washington climbed into his car, the woman picked up a hand-woven basket that held a plastic plant and threw it, striking his vehicle, the court document said.

The woman then attempted to enter the car to get her cell phone but Washington resisted, according to court paperwork.

The victim ran around in front of the vehicle toward the driver's side when Washington appeared and "shoved her from behind, causing her to hit the ground, causing several injuries, including a broken right collarbone, road-rash type of scrapes, bruising and cuts to her right arms, right hip and right leg," according to the probable cause statement.
