PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors said it unanimously approved the appointment of a south Phoenix community activist to replace former state Rep. Ruben Gallego.

Norma Munoz was recommended by a three-member citizens panel appointed by the board, according to a board of supervisors news release Monday morning.

The citizens committee said it selected Munoz, a Democrat like Gallego, based on her longtime residency in South Phoenix and in District 27, her involvement and leadership, since 1994 in the Roosevelt School Board, her experience and familiarity with county government and her commitment to South Mountain community organizations and activities. Currently, Munoz is the president of the Roosevelt board. She is a lifelong resident of South Phoenix.

Munoz worked for Maricopa County for 20 years in the Justice Courts and Public Defender's Office. Her husband, Jimmie Munoz Sr., is a justice of the peace.

Munoz will serve out Gallego's remaining term this year and will take office upon being sworn in Monday, participating in the House votes for the remainder of the current legislative session, according to the release.

The citizens panel included Rev. Warren Stewart, Susie Avelar and Rosie Lopez.

Mrs. Munoz, who has already filed as a candidate for the House seat in the 2014 primary election, said she was eager to serve at the Legislature.

Two others, Reginald Bolding Jr. and Rebecca Rios, were also recommended to the board. Like Munoz, both are running for the House seat in the August Democratic primary election.
