Two years ago, the commission voted to replace Planned Parenthood (PP) with CCHS.
SHELBY COUNTY, TN -
(WMC-TV) - On Monday afternoon, a push to rebid Shelby County's family planning contract failed.
The controversy centers on the county's family planning contract with Christ Community Health Services. Two years ago, the commission voted to replace Planned Parenthood with CCHS.
Commissioner Steve Mulroy proposed a resolution urging the mayor to rebid the contract. Over the weekend, County Commissioner Chris Thomas accused Mulroy of playing politics because Mulroy is running for county mayor.
In 2011, Mulroy voted against replacing Planned Parenthood with CCHS in committee. Mulroy says when he realized he was going to lose the final vote, he traded his support for CCHS to require compliance monitoring of the agency.
"What we have here is numbers that have gone down in terms of services. Clinic visits, things of that nature by around 70 percent consistently," said Mulroy.
"I think it's interesting if you look at how the votes went down. Only Mulroy and Chism voted for it. None of the other democrats supported. I think they all realized it's political," said Chris Thomas, Shelby County Commissioner.
Thomas says Mulroy was concerned about the female vote, as many womens' groups support Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood gives abortions and some felt a Christian organization would let their beliefs get in the way of service. Mulroy contends he brought up these same concerns in 2012 and is not playing politics.
