A 14-year-old student is facing an arson charge after Richmond County School System officials say he started a fire Friday at Laney High School.
School officials were alerted to smoke coming from a third-floor restroom around 1:30 p.m., said Director of School Safety Alfonzo Williams. A soap dispenser had been set on fire.
The school was evacuated, and the fire department responded.
An arson investigator determined that the 14-year-old boy started the fire, Williams said. The boy was charged with first-degree arson and turned over to DJJ.
School discipline charges are pending, Williams said.
