58 kids on bus involved in crash in Carolina Forest

Posted: Updated:

CAROLINA FOREST, SC (WMBF) - An Horry County school bus with 58 children onboard was involved in an accident in Carolina Forest Friday afternoon, according to Horry County Schools spokeswoman Teal Harding.

The accident on Carolina Forest Boulevard involved a school bus and a Jeep Cherokee; there were 58 elementary school students on the bus. The Horry County School District originally reported that there were 62 students on the bus, but later revised that number.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins said the bus driver was exiting the school and pulled out in front of a Jeep Cherokee on Carolina Forest Boulevard. The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was transported to the hospital.

Teal Harding confirmed that since this happened right outside the school, all students were taken back inside and have been picked up by their parents. A voicemail sent to parents of students at Carolina Forest Elementary stated that it was Bus 40, the Southgate route.

The driver of the bus was taken for drug testing and cannot drive a school vehicle until the results of the test are returned, as is the policy for district employees involved in a crash.

No citations have been issued at this time, reported Cpl. Sonny Collins. A WMBF News photographer on the scene said traffic on Carolina Forest Boulevard was interrupted as crews investigated this crash.
