(RNN) - Crimea is now part of the Russian Federation, according to Russian officials.

The two countries signed a treaty allowing Russia to annex the Ukrainian peninsula after Crimeans voted in favor of joining Russia. Western officials condemned the vote as illegal and placed sanctions on Russia.

Authorities are investigating the cause of a news helicopter crash in Seattle on Tuesday that killed the two passengers. The crash happened near the iconic Space Needle in the downtown area.

Fred Phelps, founder of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church, has died at the age of 84. The group is known for its anti-gay picket lines and protests at military funerals.
