HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Madison County Commission took another step to get ready for Remington on Wednesday when it approved a secondary agreement that finalizes the deal with the gun manufacturer. It is the last piece of a $14.5 million incentive package between Remington and a consortium of cities and counties.

The Huntsville plant hasn't opened its doors yet, but Madison County Commissioner Dale Strong has his eyes set on the future. Strong has no doubts that Remington will return all investments from the state and partnering counties.

"At full employment with 2,000 jobs, the salaries for Remington will exceed $105 million for 12 months," Strong explained. "They're investing another $110.9 million to tool this plant. Yes, we have claw-backs if they don't meet the employment goals, but I'll be honest with you – I'm excited about the future. Instead of claw-backs, I want to claw further forward to see what we can do to possibly expand Remington."

Commissioner Strong said he met with Remington leaders Tuesday and they're pleased with the building and doing what they can to speed up the process. "The big thing is making a couple of strategic hires to set the right team here in Madison County," he said. "Then, that team will set up a schedule working with AIDT, the State of Alabama, and making sure that the training is done appropriately."

Strong believes about 60% of the 2,000 Remington jobs will be people living in Madison County. The next-largest percentage of hires will come from Morgan and Limestone Counties.
