Food prices see largest increase in years

MARIETTA, GA (CBS46) -

Have you noticed your grocery bill climbing? You're not alone.

In February, food prices jumped .4 percent, the largest increase in nearly 2.5 years. A drought in California, and other areas of the world, has helped drive the costs up for produce and beef.

While consumers feel it, metro-Atlanta food pantries are really taking a hit. "It's scary to me because food is a vital piece of keeping a family together," explained Lee Freeman-Smith, Project Director at the Center for Family Resources in Marietta, which runs a food pantry.

"It's definitely a cause and effect. You've got more people needing it. You've got more food going out the door, but then we've gotta be able to stock it back to meet that demand," said Freeman-Smith. She said donations will be more critical than ever.

Britney Mayfield, a client of The Center for Family Resources, relies on the Center for Family Resources to help feed her two little girls every month. "Hopefully, things will get better, and the programs will continue to help others and still continue to be around."
