FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

A Williamson County woman is accused of taking child support payments for her personal use.

Officials say 52-year-old Pamela Campbell stole $10,000 while working for Maximus, a contracted company for the Child Support Program at 212 East Main Street in Franklin. Campbell worked there for 10 years.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says the thefts occurred between 2010 and 2013. According to one of the indictments, it was more than $10,000 but less than $60,000.

Campbell surrendered herself at the Williamson County Jail on Saturday after being indicted on one count of official misconduct and one count of theft over $10,000.

"It's frustrating for those parents who are paying their child support payments, and we're definitely concerned about that," said TBI executive officer Illana Tate.

But just how she got away with it for so long is a question many would liked answered.

"We know that it occurred that she was diverting the payments, but exactly the method or how she was doing that is still under investigation," Tate said.

Custodial parents primarily receive payments through debit cards or direct deposits, according to Devin Stone, a communications officer for the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

The vast majority of child support payments are made through electronic means to include an automatic deduction from the non-custodial parent's payroll check or payments made online via a secure website, according to Stone.

TBI will also be investigating to see if Campbell ran this scheme alone or if other workers may have been involved.

"I won't say that's not a possibility, but it's still an on-going investigation," Tate said.

According to DHS, in fiscal year 2013 gross Child Support collections totaled $664,824,069.

Anyone who submitted child support payments to that office who believes their payments were compromised is asked to call TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND or 1-800-824-3463.
