SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The annual ceremony honoring Sergeant William Jasper is the only St. Patrick's Day event dedicated solely to the military.

The ceremony honors all servicemen and women, with special recognition for those of Irish descent.

Sergeant William Jasper was an Irish-American who fought and died defending Savannah in the Revolutionary War.

"The Jasper ceremonies is always held the afternoon the day before the Saint Patrick's Day Parade and it really centers around our military and honors them. we are extremely fortunate, not only to have our military, of course, and what they do for all of us, but to have the units come and participate in our parade." said Patrick Beady, St. Patrick's Parade Committee.

There was a unit that bore his name, the Irish Jasper greens unit was part of the Georgia Militia based in Savannah.
