DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Monday, the Decatur City Council is expected to vote on the long-awaited Sweetwater development project. It has taken years of negotiations dating back to 2006, with potential deals falling through on more than one occasion.

But in the latest move to push the project forward, an anchor store, Bass Pro Shops, is on board. With the deal now on paper, the project is closer than ever to coming to fruition.

If approved by the council, the first phase of the project would include the Bass Pro Shop, a hotel, 2-4 restaurants and several other retail stores.

Sweetwater would be at an intersection of I-65 and 565, in the Limestone County side of Decatur. An overpass would be built over Highway 20 to limit traffic issues.

There are incentives (PDF) involved with the deal – more than $31 million in tax rebates for the Bass Prop Shop, and $14 million for the hotel.

A deal to get the project done died last fall. City officials said the difference this time was that the outdoor retail chain was included in the discussions. "We got to sit down with Bass Pro at the table, and that helped a lot," said council member Gary Hammon. "With the developer mediating, it worked out well."

Mayor Don Kyle said we would see up to 400 new jobs in the short term, and more than 4,000 jobs produced over the next 15-20 years.

A public hearing on the development will be held Monday morning at 10 a.m. Residents will be able to voice their opinions there. A council vote is also expected.
