AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Over one hundred people were up bright and early to run in the first annual Shamrock Shuffle Five and Ten K Race.
The event benefits the Aquinas High School and booster club president Keith Wagner says it was great to see the community come out on a weekend.
"It was a great event to bring the Irish nation together, the whole Irish family, it's an event we feel is important to the community to bring us all together," he says.
All the money raised today goes towards athletic equipment and funds at Aquinas High School and runners of all ages came out to support the event.
"Everyone from every type of fitness can come out and have fun whether you're walking or running," says Wagner.
Students from Aquinas and other local high schools came out to show their support.
"It's for the school and it's for a good cause and I like running," says Aquinas student Ben Wright.
"I love running and I like doing anything that's for a good cause and I think this is something that's great to run," says Maddie Miller, a student at Evans High School.
The support from the Aquinas community was a welcome sight in the early morning hours.
"Everyone is here watching all the runners come in and you know we really love supporting Augusta and the high schools here and making sure everyone is staying fit," says runner Travis Delgado.
The race has been six months in the making and Wagner says he hopes to see this become an annual event.
"This is an event I think that we can bring out and next year make it twice as big," he says.
The community support is what kept the runners going today in support of their school as cheers filled the air and people crossed the finish line.
