Fmr. ADPH employee arrested on ethics violation, tax evasion

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A former personnel manager with the Alabama Department of Public Health is under arrest and charged with state tax evasion and state ethics violations, according to a release from the Alabama Attorney General's office and State Revenue Commissioner's office.

A Montgomery County grand jury indicted Michelle Irvin Zeigler, 50, of Prattville on five counts of Alabama income tax evasion and one count of using her position as a public employee for personal gain.

Attorney General Luther Strange's office says Zeigler surrendered Thursday at the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department and was later released on a $5,000 bond.

It's alleged that Zeigler used her official position as a former personnel manager in the ADPH to change her state income tax withholding status to "exempt" or "zero withholding" in the state's payroll and personnel system. Authorities say as a result, Zeigler paid little to no state income tax between 2007-2011.

Zeigler could face up to five years in prison and fines of up to $100,000 on each of the five evasion counts in addition to 2-20 years in prison and fine of up to $10,000 for the ethics violation count.
