VA clinic moving to MCLB

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

It's been a work in progress, but veterans and active duty military in South Georgia will begin to see healthcare improvements as early as next month.  Plans to move the VA clinic from downtown Albany to the Marine Corps Logistics Base are moving forward.

With the swipe of the pen, the VA clinic became one step closer to moving from downtown Albany to the Marine Corps Logistics Base.

It's a collaboration between the Department of Veteran's Affairs, Naval Hospital Jacksonville and MCLB.

"By collaborating we not only enhance and expand our ability to provide care, but we're also then able to do it in a more cost effective way, thereby being good stewards of taxpayer dollars," said Captain Gayle Shaffer, the Naval Hospital Jacksonville's commanding officer.

The 5,800 veterans and 1,500 active military living in Albany will soon see improved healthcare and additional services. And more than 50 jobs will be added to the area.

"By partnering with the VA we have podiatry, audiology, optometry, mental health, physical health. Those are services that currently have to be referred out of town or have to be referred down to Jacksonville," said Marine Col. Don Davis, MCLB Albany's commanding officer.

Moving the clinic has been in the works for more than a year. "Sequestration, government shutdown those are all added obstacles that kind of delayed the time-frame. So that put some things behind schedule, but ultimately I think we're still on track," said Davis.

And those behind the move plan for it to be a smooth and welcomed transition.

Officials hope to begin offering extended services next month. They plan to have the clinic up and running on the base by August.
