Man wanted in fatal Florida stabbing arrested in Augusta

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - A 23-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in Richmond County in connection with a fatal stabbing in Florida, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Zedric Joseph, 23, was arrested by U.S. Marshals and is being held at the Richmond County Jail until he is extradited back to Florida, according to the sheriff's office.

Joseph is accused of stabbing two people Friday in West Palm Beach, according to WPTV, the NBC affiliate in West Palm Beach. One of the victims died from his stab wounds.

Joseph, a University of Maine student, was arrested on warrants for one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault, according to the Bangor Daily News in Maine.

Joseph was listed as a senior running back on the 2013 roster on the University of Maine football website.

The University of Maine confirmed in a statement Wednesday that Joseph is a senior majoring in child development and family relations. He enrolled at the university in 2011 and was a member of the football team.

He was interimly suspended from the school on March 8, according to the statement.

"We were very saddened to learn that a University of Maine student has been arrested in connection with the death of one person and the injury of another in Florida," said Kenda Scheele, University of Maine assistant vice president and senior associate dean for students. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those whose lives have been forever changed by this horrific incident."

"This is very hard to comprehend," said UMaine football coach Jack Cosgrove. "We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families and friends connected to this tragedy."

Counseling and support services are being made available on campus to students and staff impacted by these events.
