School board votes to consolidate, close schools

School board votes to consolidate, close schools

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - With a swift vote on several motions, big changes now in the works for Richmond County students.

Collins Elementary School will shut its doors; Murphey Middle students will move into Josey High School; Sego Middle kids will consolidate with Butler High; and National Hills and Garrett Elementary Schools will merge.

Superintendent Frank Roberson said the call for changes was tough to make, but necessary.

"This administration has looked very, very closely at what is in the best interest of the community, and the children," said Roberson.

Part of the plan includes putting sixth graders in a different wing than older high schoolers, something many parents voiced concerns over during meetings leading up to today's decision.

"It was a compromise of them actually listening to some of the input the community gave," said parent and school board candidate Monique Braswell.

She is happy the timeline was pushed back for part of the plan, and is now hoping the school board keeps their word.

"Our job right now as parents is to hold them to what the plan is," said Braswell. "When they come for their public meeting, it's clear we have to hold them accountable for everything that's in the plan."
