Editorial: "Viewer Feedback: Where's the Courage (Tutwiler)"

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Our editorial earlier this week asking our Governor and legislators where the outrage was regarding our Alabama prison system and specifically the report on the Tutwiler Prison for Women lead to the following feedback on wsfa.com and our WSFA 12 News station Facebook page…here is just a sampling:

Marsha responded with, "Many women, including myself, have tried for years to bring this attention to the public.  My incarceration at Tutwiler was from 2008 to 2012.  Because you are a prisoner, no one wants to listen ... The State officials are showing no outrage and this is the same response Tutwiler inmates have seen and endured for years.  Thank you for your report and we are praying it will make a difference."

Mike provided the following, "A community that promotes punishment as the first remedy for both legal and "moral" infractions is the reason these conditions exist. Criminals are human beings. Human beings should be valued even if they're imperfect. Many people in Alabama are QUICK to call for blood and retribution, and are also the first ones in church on Sunday morning."

Lastly Larry writes:" Isn't it an irony that a state that prides itself on being "anti Federal Government" consistently puts itself in the position of having to be overseen by the government to be made to do the simplest "right thing". It's been this way ever since I can remember. This is only one example. Why can't we do what's right without having to be told to?"

As always, we encourage and appreciate your feedback.
