Potential Port Clinton project could bring 500 jobs

PORT CLINTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

More than 500 new jobs could be headed to Port Clinton thanks to a possible renovation project.

A $60 million proposal is in the works that would restore portions of the downtown area and the currently vacant 14-acre Water Works park.

Dave Babcock has lived in Port Clinton his entire life and says he's heard this all before.

"I've been hearing this for years and years," he said. "'We're going to do this or that' but nothing happens. And if nothing happens, it's going to stay the same."

He's hoping the city council votes to go forward with the proposal so business in the downtown area will boom again, like it did when he was a kid.

"We've been noted for a vacation town, but that's getting old," he said. "We have to bring business in here."

The development project was proposed by Washington Properties. Councilman Mike Snider says the project would definitely bring in new business.

"A hotel conference center as well as the retail and residential component," Snider said. "Green space is going to be enhanced down there and it's right on the doorstep of downtown Port Clinton."

The project would create more than 500 new full-time jobs.

"The county has led the state in many categories when it comes to unemployment, and that's been the talk of the town: jobs, jobs, jobs," he said.

Council will vote on the proposal Tuesday. If passed, construction could begin as early as 2015.
