Hope Connections, a Shreveport-based group that aids the homeless population, said the number of veterans without a home dropped this past year.
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
The latest numbers show the amount of homeless veterans in the Shreveport/Bossier area has dropped by more 32 percent, and now local groups are joining forces to try to eliminate homelessness as a whole.
Shreveport-based Hope Connections houses 11 local organizations that help homeless people find permanent housing. The group recently finished a "Point/Place" survey that showed the number of homeless vets in the area has dropped from 23 to 15.
"We hope that we cannot find a veteran anywhere and we hope the numbers of the chronically homeless are cut in half," says Executive Director Christa Pazzaglia.
The group has big goals for next year. Right now, the new facility, located at 2350 Levy St., provides a place for homeless people to receive food, medical aid and access to substance abuse help. The group hopes by helping those people who are chronically homeless first, they will be able to eradicate all homelessness.
"Take in the people with the most problems who are the most difficult to house would be prioritized for housing first," Pazzaglia says.
According to the group, in 2012 there were 28 homeless veterans counted in the area.
"It got to the point where sleep and everything was over, so that is when I turned to Jack Daniels," says Clifford Malone. Malone works with Hope Connections, and is also a veteran who was homeless. He says it was programs like Hope Connections that helped him get off the streets.
The group conducts the "Point/Place" survey every year.
